WCR (Wolverhampton Community radio)

Weekday evenings on WCR FM - WCR FM

WCR FM began in the early 2000s as Wolverhampton Campus Radio (WCR AM), a student-run station based at Wolverhampton College’s Wulfrun Campus, although an exact founding date is not publicly recorded. The station officially launched as WCR FM 101.8 on 30 March 2007 at 6:00 AM from the Newhampton Arts Centre, with its first broadcast hosted by Jason Forrest. From 30 March 2007 to April 2022, WCR FM developed as a volunteer-led, non-profit community radio station under Wolverhampton Community Radio Training (WCRT), expanding its programming to include local news, music, and community discussion while representing the city’s diverse population. A major milestone occurred in April 2022 when the station relocated to new studios in the Mander Centre and expanded onto DAB digital radio, online streaming, and smart speaker platforms. On March 2023, the station was found in breach of Ofcom broadcasting regulations due to inappropriate language aired during a programme.

As part of its continued development, WCR FM introduced youth-focused programming such as “Teen Talks,” created to give young people a platform to discuss issues affecting them, although a specific launch date for the programme is not publicly documented. On July 2025, I joined WCR FM as a volunteer and have since consistently contributed to the “Teen Talks” programme, helping to engage younger audiences while developing my own skills in communication and broadcasting. Today, WCR FM continues to operate as a multi-platform community radio station, remaining committed to serving Wolverhampton through inclusive and locally driven content.
